Library Guide and Policies

Appropriate Use of the SHISU Library - Library users should be engaged in activities associated with the use of an academic library. Such activities include reading, individual and collaborative studying, attending programs and using library services and resources. Users not engaged in these activities will be required to leave the building. Any activity that interferes with the safety of other users or staff or appropriate use of the SHISU Library is prohibited.

Appropriate Use of Library Facilities, Devices and Equipment – Library facilities, devices and equipment shall serve their designed and desired purposes. Spaces such as group study rooms and restrooms serve in the convenience of all library users. Any conduct unrelated to ordinary use is prohibited. Devices and equipment, including public computers, is intended to support university instruction, research programs, etc., and such uses are given priority.

Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices - SHISU Library requires all library users to set their cell phones and other electronic devices to silent mode. Cell phone users and users of other electronic devices should not disturb other library users that need a quiet environment for reading and scholarly research purposes.

Destruction or Mutilation of Library Materials - SHISU Library is responsible for custodial care of the inventory of library resources for the benefit of the overall community. No person should willfully, maliciously, or wantonly mutilate, deface, tear, write upon, mar, or injure any library materials, electronic resources, furnishings, equipment, or facilities.

Food and Drink - SHISU Library’s food and drink policy is intended not only to preserve our library collections and equipment and to maintain the overall longevity and comfort of library furnishings but also to provide an environment respectful of all students' study needs.

Noise and Other Disruptive Behavior - Library users expect the Library to be a quiet place for study and research. All library users are required to be courteous of others and refrain from harassing or annoying others through noisy or boisterous activities, by staring at another person, by following another person about the building, by playing audio equipment so that others can hear it, by singing or talking loudly to others or in monologues, or by behaving in a manner which can be expected to disturb other users. Talking will, however, occur as librarians and library staff provide assistance to library users.

Photographs or Films - Anyone wishing to take photographs or make films in SHISU library must seek permission from the Chief Librarian or the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services.

Smoking - Smoking, and the use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, are prohibited in all library locations.

Staff Areas - To assure the safety and productivity of librarians and library staff, unauthorized individuals are not permitted in staff areas unless invited to enter by staff as necessary for the conduct of library business.

Borrowing

A valid SHISU Library account is required to borrow and renew materials and to place recalls or requests.

Borrow and Renew Material

SHISU students, faculty, and staff may borrow books for one month. Studentsfaculty and staff are allowed to renew materials up to a maximum loan period of one month. Items cannot be renewed if the item is requested, or the user’s library account is suspended or expired, or if the maximum loan period has been reached.

Return Material

With the exception of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) or Reserves materials, users may return library materials at any library location or remote drop box.  ILL and Reserves materials should be returned directly to the Circulation Desk from where it was borrowed.

Materials are not considered returned until received and checked in at a SHISU Library location. Materials not received by their due date may be subject to fines; user privileges may be suspended if materials are not returned on time.

Recall Material

The SHISU Library collections benefit the research, teaching and learning needs of users across campus. To maximize access to these shared resources, all materials are subject to immediate recall. Recalled material must be returned within 30 days.

Faculty, Staff, and Student Library Accounts

Library privileges are automatically active for current SHISU faculty, staff and students, who may immediately begin using all library services.

SHISU faculty and students are eligible for library accounts on both campuses. An employee ID or a student ID and proof of current registration must be shown when applying at one of these other campuses.

Library privileges are not transferable. Only the campus card holder can use the card.

Library Study Spaces

The SHISU Library provides library study spaces for members of the academic community that we serve. They are available regardless of research being pursued or subject being discussed. The only restrictions that we may impose are when there is limited availability of space or special security concerns, or both. These spaces may be reserved in advance via the library homepage-Study Spaces Reservation.

Interlibrary Loan Material Use Policies

The ILL service can obtain material which is not held by the Library, and which is needed for research and study.  The main domestic supplier is the National Library of China, although we also collaborate with other libraries in China.

These policies relate primarily to borrowing, returning, and requesting materials borrowed on your behalf via ILL service. Items requested via ILL but are available in SHISU Library will be converted to Campus Document Delivery Service requests and filled from existing library holdings.

All ILL requests shall be made through a valid campus card by its holder. Eligibility to borrow materials via ILL is limited to: current SHISU senior and graduate students and current SHISU faculty and staff. All SHISU faculty / staff and students may register to use ILL. The maximum number of ILL requests is 5 for both faculty / staff and students.

Access Online Materials via Off Campus Devices

Using the library VPN Client, current SHISU students, faculty, and employees may access our licensed resources via off campus devices with their campus cards.
